Faculty of Behavioural and Social Sciences
University of Groningen
Since its foundation in 1614, the University of Groningen has enjoyed an international reputation as a dynamic and innovative centre of higher education offering high-quality teaching and research. Balanced study and career paths in a wide variety of disciplines encourage the 32.000 students and researchers to develop their own individual talents. Belonging to the best research universities in Europe and joining forces with prestigious partner universities and networks, the University of Groningen is truly an international place of knowledge.
The Faculty of Behavioural and Social Sciences (FBSS) is a centre of knowledge focusing on individuals and society. The Faculty studies issues relating to human behaviour, and the relationships between people and society as a whole. This includes the study of how people function under normal circumstances, but also of the problems encountered by individuals or groups, and how these can be resolved or prevented. Part of this Faculty is the Department of Pedagogical and Educational Sciences. This Department offers Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes in both Dutch and English, and supervises internal and external PhD students.
The unit of Child and Family Welfare is, together with the unit of Inclusive and Special Needs Education, responsible for the research and teaching programme Orthopedagogy. Both units are part of the Department of Pedagogical and Educational Sciences, and are closely related. The mission of research is to better understand, support and enhance the healthy development of children and youngsters with severe challenging needs, both on a theoretical and applied level. Our research is framed within a transactional, developmental and system-oriented perspective, thereby focusing on the interaction between children and their environment (like family, social network, school, and welfare provisions). The research of our unit is directed to signaling, explaining and effective intervening in behavioural and upbringing problems for children and their (foster) parents, including the performance of professionals (like pedagogues, teachers or social workers).
The Child and Family Welfare unit participates in the Bachelor and Master programmes of the Department. On a Bachelor’s level, we provide courses on a wide range of topics that are specific for the Child and Family Welfare field, including a Clinical Minor Orthopedagogy. On a Master’s level, we teach in the Master track Orthopedagogy, and participate in other Master tracks within the Department, including the Research Master track.
We are looking for applicants for a full professor position in Child and Family Welfare. You will have a central role in the Bachelor programme as well as in the Master programme regarding children with behavioural and upbringing problems, including supervision of Bachelor’s and (Research) Master’s theses, and traineeships. She/he will initiate and maintain collaboration within and outside our Faculty, nationally and internationally, will be responsible for the supervision of PhD students, and is able to obtain grants specific for our working field.
